Our Story

Buffalo Heritage Press is the reincarnation of Canisius College Press. Co-founders Marti Gorman and CCP Editor Joe Bieron saved the press from shutting down. Now, 13 years later, Marti runs the press with Hannah Gordon.

As Buffalonians, we know how wonderful the Queen City is. From the developing waterfront to the fabulous restaurants to the arts and music scene and, of course, our reputation as the City of Good Neighbors. But everyone else seems to think we’re all just wings and snow storms!

Join Buffalo Heritage Press to celebrate home and become a Buffalo Ambassador!

Marti Gorman, co-founder and publisher

Marti at the helm of the Spirit of Buffalo!

Marti Gorman was born and raised in Buffalo but has lived on three continents and speaks three languages. It took her 32 years to find her way home. Now that she is back, she is dedicating her energy, experience and enthusiasm to the revitalization of our community.

When she unexpectedly returned to her hometown in 2006, Canisius College Press was on the verge of shutting down. Marti joined forces with CCP Editor Joe Bieron to found Buffalo Heritage Press, bringing with her more than a decade of publishing experience. The first book bearing the Buffalo Heritage imprint was the seminal GardenWalk Buffalo book.

Over the past 12 years, Marti has published nearly 100 beautiful books about Buffalo and by Buffalo authors. These books—or gifts cleverly disguised as books, as she likes to call them—accomplish the same important goals as her inspired Buffalo Citybration. A high-profile event for eight years and now a year-round campaign, Buffalo Citybration celebrates the resurgence and promotes Buffalo as a great place to live, proactively supporting the attraction and retention of talent in this great city.

Both the books and the campaign credentialize the city, provide tools for those who wish to share their love for Buffalo, and engage people across the nation and around the world in the Queen City.

Hannah Gordon, director of marketing and publicity

Hannah Gordon was born and raised in Buffalo, though her wanderlust pulls her throughout the world. So far, she’s visited more than 10 countries but she always comes home to the Queen City.

A graduate of St. Bonaventure University, Hannah earned her B.A. in journalism and mass communication in December 2016 and her M.A. in integrated marketing communications (IMC) in May 2018. During the five years at Bonaventure, she studied abroad twice. First in Prague, Czech Republic, at Charles University. Then at Trinity College, Oxford University in Oxford, England. She was awarded the Woman of Promise Award in her undergrad and the excellence in IMC Award in her master’s.

After graduating, she went to Denver, Colorado, for a month to attend the Denver Publishing Institute, one of the book publishing industry’s premier programs.

She had been freelancing for the Press for nearly three years while finishing her degrees, designing books for the Emerging Civil War Series and serving as managing editor of the Emerging Revolutionary War Series. In August 2018, Hannah joined the Press as the director of marketing and publicity but works in nearly every area of the Press, specializing in our children’s imprint CrissCross AppleSauce.

She blogs (when she gets the chance) at Sitting in Spilt Ink. You can find her on Twitter and Instagram @hr_gordon. Or reach her via email at hannah@buffaloheritage.com
