Farm Hands: Hard Work and Hard Lessons From Western New York Fields

For a decade, Tom Rivers wrote a column for The Daily News in Batavia, N.Y., since 1997. He covers agriculture, local government, and other community stories. Rivers has won several Associated Press writing awards and was named a “Friend of Agriculture” in 2006 by the Orleans County Farm Bureau. The New York State Agricultural Society presented him with an honorary “golden pitchfork” in January 2009, in The Daily News. Rivers also was named a finalist for the Mike Berger Award given by the Columbia Journalism School for the best in-depth, human-interest reporting. He lives in Albion with his wife Marsha and
for their children.
